Jane Lynch. SNL. Done. And done. Thank you, SNL, for not fucking up. And we mean that from the bottom of our hearts.
Now we haven’t watched an entire episode of SNL from 11:30ish to 1:00 in a very, very, very long time. We didn’t even recognize half the cast, but were very happy to see that Kristen Wiig is still there. The overprotective part of us was very, very scared that she would be underused and abused by bad writing, and that the night’s Twitter feed would be full of woes like “WTF SNL #JaneIsBetterThanThis” – but no. We didn’t cringe at any sketch, and we actually laughed out loud at a lot of them. She sketched, she acted, she sang; she was a mom, a therapist, and Faith Hill (channeling Talledega Nights). We could have used more sketches where Jane actually played the main character, but we also did say that Jane shines in an ensemble, didn’t we? Be careful what you wish for…
You can watch the entire episode online here, but Hulu also nicely broke down the episode sketch by sketch. So awesome. Following are our favorite parts of the episode.
Jane’s monologue. She comes out wearing a little something that shows a little something. This monologue fulfilled one of our 7 Hopes and Dreams for Jane Lynch on SNL: she had a chance to show off her deadpan delivery.
Suze Orman Show. We were really excited when we saw this, because we thought Jane was going to play Suze. But no, Kristen Wiig did, in what apparently is a recurring character for her. Jane plays a “roommate” from Suze’s past. This one, we thought, was the vagillion-dollar sketch of the night.
Mom’s on Facebook. Jane plays a mom a lot, and here was no different: she plays a mom in a commercial for a Facebook app called Mom’s on Facebook. This one was funny for a lot of reasons.
Returns and Exchanges. Jane plays another mom-like character trying to return something, but this one actually is funny because of Jay Pharoah’s spot-on impression of Denzel Washington, down to the way he claps. Spot on.
Sigh. This one for the books. Next up: Jane Lynch to Host SNL (Again, Please?).
