Sue Sylvester-ish Track Suits: Navy with light blue stripes
Woah, who saw this coming? Oh, people who follow Katie Couric’s Twitter feed, apparently. In an interview that reminds us a bit of Terry Gross’ interview with Jane Lynch on NPR, Katie Couric interviewed our Jane on her @KatieCouric segment on CBS News online. It’s more or less 30 minutes long, which is totally awesome. Scroll down for the full embed, or read on for a summary if your computer is soundless.
Katie devotes most of the time to talking about Glee, why it’s so successful, and theories on what made Sue Sylvester mean like Sue Sylvester. Past the halfway mark, things get more interesting. Jane talks about her favorite role (Laurie Bohner in A Mighty Wind, even though she and Laurie are very, very different people, as Jane is not a “sexual goddess” and therefore feels a little bit out of her element playing sex god Laurie) (lest we forget, Laurie did things the other girls wouldn’t do). Jane also talks about being openly gay in Hollywood, and goes about it the way we hope most of us openly gays go about it: she has “no strategy on how to deal with my orientation.” Regarding the recent NewsWeek article that has caused all sorts of brouhaha, Jane diplomatically states that everyone is entitled to their opinion (go USA!), and, freedom of speech notwithstanding, the article really didn’t make a whole lot of sense. She is further diplomatic when asked about the varying attitudes towards those Sneaky Gays, and then not, and that is the best part of the whole interview: “There are some people who will never shift [their negative opinions about gays and lesbians]. And that’s ok. They’ll probably be dead soon.” HA!
Katie also talks to Jane briefly about her role as Gretched the Ogre in the upcoming Shrek sequel to the sequel, and asks if Jane would like to do a few more dramatic roles if she could. The answer to that is an enthusiastic yes (and, as we will review soon here on the Jane Lynch Project, might we add that she has been great in her role as a schizophrenic mother of one of the characters in Criminal Minds). Finally, a little verbal Rorschach test, as Katie asks Jane for her reaction to: 1) Olivia Newton-John (“Oh the best!”) 2) Jennifer Coolidge (“The funniest!”); 3) Ellen (“Groundbreaker”); 4) Rush Limbaugh (“Oh, we can do without him, can’t we?” [smile]); and 5) Carol Brady (“The best mom on the planet.”).
They end with Katie giving Jane an Adidas track suit, navy with light blue stripes. Well, it’s the thought that counts.
